Old Manor Cottages

Surrey, UK

Old Manor Cottages, a Grade II listed medieval manor house, was meticulously restored and extended, creating three distinct dwellings within the footprint of two original residences and their associated outbuildings. The project struck a perfect balance between preserving the property’s historical integrity and introducing modern living spaces suited to contemporary life.

The restoration required listed building consent and a sensitive approach to retain the manor's historic character. Using traditional building methods, the structure retained its authenticity and ability to breathe, while two thoughtfully designed modern additions addressed the needs of contemporary living.

A vaulted living space with a linked kitchen replaced an outdated flat-roof extension, and a new side wing was built on the site of a derelict shed, transforming an unused storage room into a new dwelling. Both additions were designed to integrate seamlessly with the manor's existing structure.

The new additions reinterpreted the local vernacular with features like tile-hung walls and green-painted windows, blending harmoniously with the historic fabric of the manor. The consistent use of materials throughout the restoration created a cohesive design, making the updates feel like a natural evolution of the manor's story. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles, this remarkable project safeguarded a piece of history while creating new homes for the future.
